Every human being needs assistance and advice in varying degree to make their life purposeful and the other way successful. The need is universal. So everybody needs assistance at some time in her life. Some will need it constantly and throughout their entire lives while other needs it rarely at the time of crises.
In the primitive society, the elders of the family, teacher and family priests gave this assistance or help. Why counseling is necessary
• During the last two decades far- reaching changes have taken place in the entire economic, political, religious and social structure of the country.
• A child is beset with problems and problems and it becomes very difficult for him to achieve satisfying results without the aid of guidance.
• Individuals differ in their physical characteristics, emotional characteristics, personality traits-ability, interest, achievement, etc.
• The requirement of various occupations\courses/streams also differs, this makes increasingly necessary to have a definite programme of guidance.
• Our country has markedly progress in the different spheres of life, some remarkable areas are of computer, and information technology space and human recourse development.
• To maintain this pace our children should be equipped with every life skills with future edge.
• We are in the era of economic planning and we require scientist, researchers, managers, planners, leaders, industrialists, bankers and the most important the people with courageous heart, intelligent mind and who ready to change positively.
• The craze of conventional white collard jobs must come to an end.
• If the choice of studies and vocations is not available the child will continue to be frustrated and disgusted.
• It is estimated that there are over more than 5000 occupational titles and this fact poses formidable challenge in the selection of an occupations.
• If we want that round pegs should not be inserted in square holes and vice-versa which leads to a colossal wastage of human energy we need a service which can deal with the present for better future.
• Today’s child needs to be given all recognition and they have the right to choose their own course of action or profession which they want to join.
• The entire philosophy of education thus stands changed and this calls for the need of assistance.
• Also in this dynamic age great variety of professions are upcoming and one faces dilemma-what to chose? When to choose? How to choose?
• There is a continuous increase in the number of pupils in schools, which leads to a number of adjustment problems. Educational standards are affected. Hence there is a great need for classification of pupils according to their abilities, interests, personality type and many other qualities, so that each is guided to learn and adjust at his own pace.
